Brief

Olive+Elliot is a fashion startup looking to produce sustainable textiles in Ontario, Canada.

Olive+Elliot is a fashion startup looking to produce sustainable textiles in Ontario, Canada. Their mission is to change the face of the fashion industry and help reduce the industry carbon footprint by growing the materials organically using only natural dyes and using as little transportation as possible in the process.

The company will manage this process from start to finish.  It will grow, mill and finish the textiles, all from natural, organic materials (cotton, nettle, milkweed, and flax).

Research

With “True Cost” (a documentary on the impact of the fashion industry on the planet) in mind, we set to interview as many people as possible working in the fashion industry in Ontario, Canada. We needed to have a better understanding of how Canadian eco-fashion designers shop for textiles and what makes them want to buy from one supplier rather than the other. Keeping in mind that this is a startup, we also wanted to understand what was needed to get external funding.

We interviewed with 6 eco-fashion designers, 4 grant investors, 1 angel investor and 38 environmentalists. First we identified that the most important factor was that the quality of the product matched the price. Other factors were the perceived transparency and credibility of the brand/supplier.

Problem

To create a platform in which the client could showcase its mission, values and create relationships with its customers.

  • How do we convince eco-fashion designers to choose Olive+Elliot textiles over competitors?

  • How do we evoke trust and credibility in Olive+Elliot?

  • How do we communicate the value in Olive+Elliot’s business model?

Goal

Create a site that is transparent, informative, and inspiring that Olive+Elliot can grow into within the next several years.

Moodboard

Olive & Elliot exerts a feeling of elegance, nature and simplicity.  We needed to ensure the colours, shapes and fonts used, properly reflected these key branding attributes.

Color

As always the colour choices were critical to the branding.  Starting from nothing we searched for colours that would properly represent the values of the brand.  We settled on various shades of green because of the connection with nature and the feeling of serenity they instilled.

For the typefaces we focused on the Futura light and bold font.  It is elegant and modern, both key attributes of the brand.

Icon

We chose an outline style as our primary icon design.  This style exhibits a feeling of openness and simplicity that matched the mood of the brand and invited the user to a relaxing and pleasant experience.

Final Design.

We started with a blank slate and ended with a product that truly represented what O+E is all about.  Careful attention to research outcomes pushed us to create design details that encompassed the key qualities of the company.  Elements including the logo and colours merged alongside functional details such as navigation and content to provide the user with a pleasant and informative experience.
